Dr. Robert Steadward – Malmo neighbour and Paralympic movement builder
DR. ROBERT STEADWARD: The Malmo Plains Neighbour Who Helped Build the Paralympic Movement
Some of the most extraordinary stories are found right in our backyard.
Among the early neighbours of Malmo Plains was Dr. Robert D. Steadward, known to many as “Dr. Bob” — the friendly neighbour with the yard full of garden gnomes. What many may not have realized was that he would go on to help build the Paralympic movement worldwide, expand opportunities for people with disabilities, and become one of Canada’s most accomplished and decorated citizens.
Bob was also recently honoured with the 2026 Communication & Leadership Award from Toastmasters International, presented by Greg Gazin.
Did you know? Community leagues are unique to Edmonton
DID YOU KNOW?
Community leagues are unique to Edmonton! A league is a group of people that comes together to make their neighbourhood a better place.
Malmo Community League includes all of Malmo, including Galbraith House, The Californian condo complex, Edgeway apartments, the new buildings in Michener Park, and all the houses, too.
Malmo has over 230 household and individual members.
From April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, over 75 unique volunteers gave 1600+ hours to put on community league events and programs that make Malmo a great place to live for all ages.
Many of our events and programs are open to the whole community, so you don’t have to be a member to participate.
Not yet a member? Join to support us.
Memberships are effective from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027. No internet? Call 780-885-0994 for details and payment options.
Community League Notes – board, IRC, and treasurer spotlight
UPCOMING BOARD MEETINGS at the Community Hall
Meetings are open to all members.
Meetings are on hold for the summer. The next meeting is:

COMMUNITY LEAGUE NOTES
Your Malmo Community League board is 100% made up of volunteers. They put in over 5000 hours to keep the community league running for the benefit of all Malmo residents.
Your 2026/2027 board looks similar to last year with many returning faces. We officially welcome Civics Director, Cameron Dykstra.
Farewell and huge thanks to Sam Saunders (Vice President) and Lisa Robinson (Secretary).
Malmo’s Infrastructure Redevelopment Committee (IRC) is always busy. Check out their progress and news on the Malmo website: Hall Renewal updates
Spotlight on Gloria Delisle, Treasurer
“A 16-year resident of Malmo, I’ve always appreciated the cleanliness and quietness of the area despite the Whitemud freeway being next to our backyard. It’s been a great place for walking!
After my husband passed away, I felt a need to get out of the house and the Community League seemed a good place to begin. Initially, I volunteered to be the treasurer’s assistant but soon moved into the Treasurer role. It’s been a huge learning experience and mostly very enjoyable and certainly rewarding. I’ve met so many welcoming, talented, and interesting people within walking distance of my home and I look forward to meeting many more of my Malmo neighbours!”
