November is Radon Awareness Month
What is radon? A colourless, odourless gas that can build up in enclosed spaces like basements.
Why should I care? It’s a health risk and one of leading causes of lung cancer in Canada. Yikes!
Can I test for it? YES. The Community League has borrow-able re-usable radon detectors that can help you make a decision about taking next steps, such as installing a fan and other infrastructure to disperse it safely. Check out malmoplains.com/radon for more information.

Volunteer Spotlight: Patricia Rijavec, Secretary
This was our second year in Malmo Plains and we are loving the neighbourhood and neighbours! My skill-set for the secretary role is varied: a lifelong educator, past provincial public servant, Distinguished Toastmaster, and lead for numerous not-for-profits. I have seen my share of policies, minutes, and committee meetings, and have come to the conclusion that the best part of any working group is the people and, of course, the snacks! Volunteering has always been a part of my life, and contributing to a great community is a way of getting to know the people that make it great. COMMUNITY LEAGUE NOTES .... Our mission is to provide opportunities for recreational & social activities for all Malmo residents.
Hall Booking Coordinator – Volunteer Opportunity
Our hall is a busy place and we need your help to ensure that bookings and rentals continue to happen smoothly! If you’re a detail-oriented person who loves dealing with people, apply today to manage the hall booking email and the official community calendar; issue rental agreements/contracts; work with our Treasurer to ensure deposits/payments are received and refunded; generate and distribute lockbox & alarm codes to renters & event organizers. On average requires 2-3 hours per week. Training provided! Contact president@malmoplains.com
Got skills? Want to contribute? Build your resume? Join our team – all are non-board positions.
Outdoor Ice Rink Manager – Paid Position
Do you love ice and snow? Got a knack for making flat, frozen, shiny surfaces? Have we got a job for you! Make and maintain the ice at the Malmo Community Rink and also maintain our rink “shack” at the back of the hall so it’s clean and available for skaters. Send your resume to Chris, or email for more details, at facilities@malmoplains.com
Radon Program Thanks

Shoutouts & Thanks
Spaghetti Dinner
Heaps and heaps of delicious thanks to REBECCA SCHELLENBERG for coordinating Malmo’s annual Spaghetti Dinner. And so many thanks to the volunteers who helped prep, cook, sell tickets and memberships, and more! Very special thanks to those that stayed to clean up – you are a marvelous bunch!
Southwest Malmo Block Party
Yummy thanks to TRENT CHARLES for organizing the “whale”-y SW Malmo Block Party/potluck in early October. From new neighbours to original residents, from babes-in-arms to seniors, the hubbub of laughter and conversation was inspiring and heart-warming.
Want to host your own block party? Reach out to Lisa at social@malmoplains.com.
Karaoke Night
Musical thanks to TRENT and to KEN GEUSEBROEK for organizing and hosting Karaoke Night. What a blast; it won’t be the last – see you in February!
Oktoberfest Pub Night
Pretzels and bratwurst and latkes, oh my! LISA CHARLES did an amazing job putting on the Oktoberfest Pub Night with the help of a super crew of helpers. Y’all ROCK! The music was fabulous, the beer was tasty, and the company was spot on! See you at Pub Night in March, featuring the Malmo premier of a local band.
Halloween Pet Portraits
Flashy thanks to MAUREEN DONOVAN and RON FERRIS and others who helped make the Halloween Pet Portraits so much fun for our furry friends. And comfy thanks to PATRICIA RIJAVEC who donated handmade rugs (100% of proceeds donated to SCARS). Five dogs and three cats got the super-star treatment.
Missed it? Get your Christmas pics – see page 1 for details.
Neighbourly Kindness
And last, but most definitely not least: Gratitude to BRICE DAVIDSON for offering a home-grown pumpkin replacement to a neighbour whose fall display was targeted by nasty porch pirates (boo). We’re so fortunate that Malmo is full of awesome folks who care about the people around them.
