Clarification: August 7 Public Meeting About the Alberta Referendum
Some Malmo residents raised concerns about the upcoming August 7 “Community Meeting on the Referendum.” The Malmo Community Hall was rented by Alberta Women for Independence to invite local residents to discuss the upcoming Alberta Referendum in October. The rental and meeting are legal and allowed, and checks were completed before the rental was accepted.
The Community League had no input into or prior knowledge of the flyer residents may have received. Feedback about the wording “Community Meeting” has been sent to the group because it appears to have caused confusion.
Whether or not you agree with the group’s views, please be respectful in social media posts, especially in the Malmo Neighbours Facebook group, and in any discussions.
Membership Renewals Are Now Open
The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues has changed its membership year to run from August 1 to July 31.
Your existing community league membership remains valid until August 31, 2026, but you can now purchase your 2026–2027 membership.
Notice of Public Meeting: Infill and Restrictive Covenants
Thursday, September 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Malmo Hall
Watch for a flyer in your mailbox or check the Malmo website for more information.
Save the Dates: Spaghetti Dinner and Karaoke Night
Saturday, September 19: Malmo Spaghetti Dinner
The much-loved dinner returns to the hall, but volunteers are needed to make it possible. It is open to all Malmo residents and includes pasta, sauce, salad, breadsticks and dessert. Alcohol will be available for purchase.
Volunteer jobs include chopping sauce ingredients, pre-cooking noodles, setting up and putting away tables and chairs, helping at the bar, and washing pots and pans. Volunteers eat free. Contact Becky at becky.schellenberg@gmail.com to learn more or add your name to the list.
Saturday, October 3: Karaoke Night
Join us from 6 to 9 p.m. at the hall. Open to all Malmo residents and beginner-friendly. Show off your vocal cords and your dance moves. Alcohol will be available for purchase.
Shoutouts
- Many thanks to the volunteers who braved the mosquitoes and weeded the landscaped beds in front of the Malmo Hall, along with smaller beds in the bump-outs and along the multi-use path. You are keeping Malmo looking on point!
- Thank you to everyone who volunteered for the July barbecue. Although it was cancelled, we truly appreciate your willingness to help and hope to see you at the Spaghetti Dinner.
- Slightly soggy thanks to the neighbours who cleared debris from their streets, including around sewer grates, after the recent storms.
Three Lines Free
Ads, venting, poems and general silliness.
- See page 2 of the July/August newsletter for more ads and other items.
- The wind, it howled | My cat, she yowled | Thunder on!
- OK | Who’s writing these crazy poems? | “It is I, Ann Onymous.”
The submission deadline is August 23, although submissions by August 20 would be appreciated.
You made it to the end. Grab yourself a cool drink and stay breezy—but not too breezy—Malmo!
